The installation, named ‘Take my Lightning but don’t steal my Thunder’ was created by artist Alex Chinneck, renowned for his architectural illusions.
Cordek was called upon, as part of a team of specialists, to help bring this installation to life. The illusion of weightlessness was achieved using sixteen tonnes of steel and the structure was ‘dressed’ in polystyrene and resin. The bricks were made of polystyrene, as were the doors, window frames and balustrades, which were all 3D modelled and digitally cut using Cordek’s 5 Axis CNC Machine.
A 12-metre armature hidden inside the structure is connected to the ground through an innocuous market cart, in which a 6-tonne counterweight stops it all from falling over.
