March 2016
A new permanent memorial dedicated to the organ and tissue donors and their families has been installed outside the new £38 million emergency centre at New Cross Hospital. The design, “Gift of Life” came from two artists, both 21, Matthew Sadler and Neal Welch, as winners of a competition launched by The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust and the University of Wolverhampton.
Cordek were able to provide an innovative solution to bring this bespoke design to life. The 3D CAD artwork was developed and programmed into our five axis CNC router which carved the hand shaped models out of Filcor EPS (expanded polystyrene). To create the visual effect of concrete the polystyrene was then sent to a specialist to be coated in Jesmonite.
From the initial concept we helped to ensure the project stayed on budget whilst still achieving the artists’ original vision in both scale and detail.
The official opening of the memorial took place at New Cross Hospital on Sunday 13th March 2016.
The designers said “This ‘Gift of Life’ is the greatest gift that anyone can give. We feel very proud of the contribution we have made in honour of this.”
The initiative is designed to attract visitors to the NHS Organ Donation website.
